Let me tell you what it says, here. Proverbs 20:27. This is out of the Living Bible. Proverbs 20:27 says, “A man’s conscience is the Lord’s searchlight exposing his hidden motives.” What a powerful verse. “A man’s conscience”—my conscience, fill in your name. Ed. Suzy. Bill. Frank. Sally. “A man’s conscience”–a woman’s conscience~”is the Lord’s searchlight exposing our hidden motives.” You see, it’s a gift from God to tell us what’s right and what’s wrong and it literally is a searchlight that exposes your motives and exposes my motives.
But, is that it? Then we say, “Well, I’m going to turn on Proverbs 20:27 and Ed said that’s it.” No, there’s another light. Psalm 119:105. Turn there. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp”~that’s the word of God~”is a lamp to my feet, a light for my path.” A lamp to my feet, a light to my path-God’s word. So see, the conscience exposes our motives, your motives, my motives. That’s the first light.
The second light is, the word of God, which directs our footsteps~so this is precisely how to have a conscience that is awake. The word of God and our motives, the searchlight shining, both searchlights on every area of our lives because, when we allow the light of God to shine and He exposes those shadows and He exposes those inconsistencies and God says, “Bring them out into the light, deal with them and I’ll forgive you.”
Is your conscience asleep? Something you’ve covered up, you’ve twisted around, you’ve rocked to sleep? You’ve lied under pressure? You’ve taken something illegally? You’ve knifed someone in the back in a relationship? Hey, you might be as~”You know, I can forget about it.” And you might have thought, “Hey, there’s no way I’ll ever remember it.”
